The world in a tank: CO2 Drawdown Challenge

A rectangular aquarium with moss and an air quality monitor inside. Outside are saran wrap, tape, and a grow light. Each part is labeled with an arrow pointing to it. The image is meanty to be used to show students what the experimental set-up looks like when complete.

EAS Professor Toby Ault is part of a team of researchers who have created and shared an activity (through Ithaca's Paleontological Research Institution—PRI) designed to show concretely how plants draw down atmospheric carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Instructions for the activity are available for free through the PRI website

Ault presented the activity to a group of Cornell alumni during the 2024 Cornell Reunion and the resulting video showing the tank they created as well as data from several weeks of collection are now available.
